Longevity Recipe

For nearly a decade, Dan Buettner has been researching what he calls “Blue Zones” to reveal the secrets to living healthier, longer, and happier. “People in the Blue Zones reach the age of 100 at 10 times the average rate” (bluezones.com). Through ongoing study, Buettner has refined nine longevity lessons that seem to increase health and long life, and decrease disease:

1. Move naturally – engage in activities that would allow natural movement like walking to a friends place, gardening, & being outside

2. Live with life purpose– stay connected with what you live for

3. Self-care and stress reduction– take time to be in silence, pray, meditate, unplug, connect internally with your ancestors or those who love you

4. Eat only until 80% full– listen to your body to moderate the amount of food you eat and eat more earlier in the day

5. Eat a plant-based diet– eat meat seldomly and in small amounts

6. Drink alcohol moderately– wine drinkers in Blue Zones outlived non moderate wine-drinkers

7. Spiritual or religious community engagement– find a sense of your own belonging, community, and faith

8. Lineage– engage in and/or live with family, take care of youth and elders

9. Social Tribe– connect with and commit to your “people”, spend time bonding and developing deep connections
